VW tools

VW toolsIt is no secret that auto mechanics have a ton of tools. Some mechanics keep tools in a standard tool box. Others keep their tools in a mix of tool box and roll cart. I personally love using a roll cart or roll kart as I prefer. It gives great flexibility, and mobility.

NOTE:
This is how I personally have set up my kart. It is a setup I have had for years and years. That does not mean I am saying other ways are wrong, or my way is better. This is what works for me. If there is a brand of tool I use that you don’t like, that is cool. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

Join me on this VW tech roll kart tour:

  • Hanging wrenches on the back
  • The down side of hanging Snap On wrenches
  • Sockets and ratchets on the top deck
  • Specialty sockets and bits
  • Extensions and trim tools
  • The must have “junk drawer”
  • Pliers and power tools
  • Axle boot tool
  • Power Probe, DVOM, Torque wrench
  • and more

As many of you know, I LOVE tools. Thankfully I have a job that allows me to buy the tools I need, and the tools I want. Today we are going to look at whether air tools are better than electric tools. We are specifically talking about battery powered tools on today’s show. Of course when it all boils down to it, it’s up to you. Each of the tools has a place where they win the tool wars!

aluminum socket trayToday I will be reviewing the 1/4″ drive socket tray from WestlingMachine.com . I have been looking for a good quality socket holder for years. Sadly most of the socket holders are plastic and do not seem to hold up well. At least with the abuse that I put them though. I use my 1/4″ drive sockets all the time. That means having a good quality way to store them is vital.

Thursday is normally the day that I review tools and products. Well today I wanted to step out of that a little. I wanted to chat a little about the weird things that mechanics use when working on cars. This is kind of a play on my “Top 5 Favorite Auto Mechanic’s Tools” video. Something a little more lighthearted after yesterday’s video on flat rate. Mechanics also spend a small fortune on tools. It is nice to have a few things we don’t need to turn to the Snap On truck for.

Happy Thursday everyone! Today we are talking about one of the best investments that you can make if you are working on a Volkswagen or Audi. That is VCDS or Vag Com Diagnostic Software. I refer to it as Vag-Com. I purchased Vag-Com years and years ago. I would say that I use it almost every day. If you are planning to do any DIY on a VW beyond oil changes, you really need this!

After talking about Prepping a car for winter yesterday, I have the holiday season on the brain. Now, this is NOT a holiday show, but I thought it would be a great time to talk about buying tools as a gift. So today on the automotive podcast, we are talking about things to consider when buying tools as gifts. I am also working on a guide to buying tools this holiday season. That will be coming out next week. I assure you, there will be awesome deals.

I am someone that has spent a lot of time researching tools. In addition to that time doing research, I have spent a TON of money on tools. So today’s show it really built on how to buy tools for anyone from the auto enthusiast, to the DIY homeowner. Also remember that gift cards are always awesome, but are not really personal.

On today’s automotive podcast we talk about:Auto mechanic tools

    • Car person
    • The Pro
    • The Woodworker
