How To Fix Blend Doors ~ Install a Heater Core and Reseal The HVAC Box
How To Fix Blend Doors ~ Install a Heater Core and Reseal The HVAC Box

Blend door foam

If your MK3 or MK4 has no heat, no AC, or the controls don’t work, it may be due to the blend doors. From the factory the belt door is covered in foam to soften the door close, and divert air in the proper direction. Over time the foam breaks down and blows out the vents. Well it’s time to fix that. This is the most comprehensive guide to fixing blend doors out there.

Today I show you exactly how to disassemble the HVAC box, clean and recover all the doors, and reseal the box. All the products I used are listed below. There are plenty of other options out there,  but most of these items can be found easily online, or at your local Home Depot Motorsports.

5 Tips For Coilover Adjustment and Installation

Adding an adjustable suspension to a car is a great way to maximize the performance. But installing and adjusting coilovers can be a little intimidating. What happens if you get the ride height wrong? What if it’s too low? Will my car flip over? These questions may seem a little extreme, but I have seen them asked over and over. Well I made the “will my car flip” one up.

A coilover is an a spring and shock absorber assembly that allows for adjustments to be made to the vehicle’s ride height, damping, rebound and more. This will allow us to dial in the suspension for our exact needs. The coilovers we are using for this video only allow for ride height adjustment. The folks at New German Performance sent me their MK3 coilover kit to check on on the GTI.

How To Replace a Fuel Pump and Fuel Filter ~ Project White Wookie

How To Replace a Fuel Pump and Fuel Filter ~ Project White Wookie

Replacing a fuel pump or fuel filter can be scary. But if you follow these tips, and this DIY, you cando it. In upgrading the VR6 with bigger cams, and adding a turbocharger, I needed to upgrade the fuel system. With the added air, I needed more fuel. After much research and advice, I settled on upgrading the in tank fuel pump.

This “upgrade” didn’t quite go as planned. So this video will show you simply how to replace a fuel pump, and fuel filter. I am working on the video for “How to HACK upgrade your fuel pump”. That will be out soon. I have to be careful about those types of videos. I don’t want to spread bad practices out to the world.

The VR6 Turbo Is ALIVE ~ First Start Success and Failure

The VR6 Turbo Is ALIVE ~ First Start Success and FailureThat is right, the fully rebuilt VR6 turbo GTI aka White Wookie is alive. After a full engine rebuild and adding a turbo it’s finally running. The first starts were not allsuccessful. I had one issue with hooking everything up. It ended up being a very minor issue with the crank position sensor. Luckily it ended up being a simple fix. I am also glad I opted to buy a new crankshaft position sensor during the build. It would have been tragic if I couldn’t start it because of a sensor being bad.

The Easiest Way To PROPERLY Wire Electric Cooling Fans

The Easiest Way To PROPERLY Wire Cooling FansWiring a cooling fan in a car seems pretty scary. I spent tons of time searching the web to find how other folks did it. This search turned up a lot of bad wiring jobs, and bad ways to wire fans. I thought it was best to dive right into the wiring diagram and figure out how to make it work WITH the OEM fan module. After drawing out 10+ different ways to wire the fans, I found the easiest way to make it work. No need for aftermarket controllers, or to have the fans on all the time.

This is how to wire two electric cooling fans on a MK3 VR6 GTI.

ARP HEAD STUDS VR6

ARP HEAD STUDS VR6Next up in the White Wookie build, it’s time for ARP studs! This is a very common upgrade when adding boost to any engine. ARP is THE name in automotive hardware. Making the choice to run ARP head studs and ARP connecting rod bolts was a very easy one. Installation of these bolts is a little different than the factory cylinder head bolts.

The OEM VR6 cylinder head bolts are “torque to yield”. That means they stretch when you properly tighten them. What that also means is, they can not be reused. The ARP studs on the other hand can be reused. They cost a little more to use, but overall are a better fastener.
