Blue-Point HCP9 Hose Clamp Pliers ~ Review

After a long break from tool reviews, I am back in action. These are the Blue-Point HCP9 Heater Hose Clamp Pliers. I have been through many pairs of hose clamp pliers over the years. Most of them are average. These heater hose pliers are the best I have found. I know that spring clamps, or Corbin clamps can be removed with basic pliers. But having these in your tool box will make life much easier.

dealership rant
support Patreon

You guys asked, so I started a Patreon

Are you wondering where the dealership ran is? Now that I have been away from the dealership for about a month, I am starting to develop the new normal for life. That means getting the process and schedule down. It means finding the times of day that I really can be the most productive. Let’s just say that 11:00pm-1:00am have become a surprising sweet spot. One thing I didn’t account for was an exception that some people had.

I was not aware that people expected a post dealership life rant. For some, it have have appeared that I was putting on a “happy face” to create the videos I create. Like I was hiding the real deal because I was worried about getting fired. Well friends, I can assure you I was never worried about getting fired. 😉

blinker flashing fast

how to check fusesAfter driving around with no turn signals for an embarrassing amount of time, I finally had a chance to diagnose why my turn signals were not working. They failed in a different way. Often when a turn signal doesn’t work right, the turn signal bulb flashes fast. This was not the case in my car.

As you will see, we talk the path for a complete diagnosis of the turn signals. There are many ways that a mechanic may diagnose this issue. I really want to start exposing you guys to my diagnostic approach to issues. Then it’s up to you to form you own strategies for attacking issues.

Eco marathon

Shell Eco Marathon

You may think getting an insane miles per gallon is just a dream, think again. While getting 2500 MPG in a big SUV may not be possible getting 2500+ mpg in a prototype car is possible. I had the chance to attend the Shell Eco-Marathon Americas and see this first hand.

The Eco-Marathon is an event all around innovation. Students from 8 different countries compete to build the most fuel efficient vehicle they can. It was pretty amazing to see what these high school and college teams could come up with. I think about 17 year old Charles, and there is no way I could have been doing this stuff at 17. Check out the Shell Eco-marathon Americas website to learn more about the program.

Battery voodoo
Battery voodoo

Click here if you need jumper wires

Modern cars are basically rolling computer storage. As with all computers, vehicle computers get fussy from time to time. A computer acting fussy can lead to strange electrical problems in our cars. One easy way to reset the entire car system is to perform battery voodoo. In the VW repair world this is also called a Cap Discharge, or Capacitive Discharge. That is a fine thing to call it, but it’s not exactly what we are doing.

This hard reset on the car has fixed a lot of strange issues for me. Everything from radio and lighting issues, to gauges reading funny, and electrical components not working. This is a relatively safe process, but you will always want to take extra precautions to keep yourself safe and not damage your car.

Snap on tool box tour

buying a mechanic's tool boxThis tool box tour is a video you guys have been asking more about for a long time. As you know tool box organization is vital to a professional mechanic. To be successful, we have to work both smart and hard. Professional mechanics set their toolbox up in a way that promotes efficiency and cleanliness. Today I take you on a tour of my red Snap On tool box. This has been my shop tool box since early 2009.

You will notice some pretty interesting things about this box, for example empty drawers. Don’t worry I will address that in the video. As many of you also know I shot this right before leaving the dealership as a full time Volkswagen technician. If you want to learn more about why I left the dealership, check out The End of an Era.

Dirty cabin air filter

Have you ever been hit in the face with a dirty gym sock? Thankfully I have not. But I have experienced the sensation of a dirty cabin air filter. I was driving a loaner car to training when I turned on the car’s air-conditioning and got a face full of stink. That stink was coming from a dirty cabin air filter. This is the filter that works hard to keep the nasty dirty air from getting into your car. Not replacing your cabin air filter, or pollen filter as I call it, can lead to an unpleasant experience for you and your passengers.

Now this is a dirty cabin air filter!
