Top 5 Favorite Auto Mechanic’s Tools
Hey everyone. Today we step out a little from the standard tool reviews. A viewer asked me what some of my favorite tools are. So I figured I would do a quick video of my Top 5 auto mechanic’s tools. I actually did sneak an extra one in there 😉
For a tool to make my list, it either needs to save me time, or save me money. So these 5 are at the top of the list for that reason. They are also in no particular order.

Where did that beer fall on the list? Hope it wasn’t one of those nasty Delirium tremens (saw the sticker on your box one time). How could you leave out the little guy in your pocket, no not that, the screwdriver! Kudos for Klein tools. Their cutters are the best and I agree their screwdrivers are probably the best made. They make a set of long-shaft electronic service drivers that I use all the time. I used to agree on Snap-On ratchets say twenty years ago but you said it in your vid there “gets rebuilt a lot”. Honestly I have three that after 30+ years had to be rebuilt recently and have had some newer ones not last a year. Have that exact same ratchet you held up there and cranking on an axle nut the hinge pin pops out and flies across the shop. Really Snap-On, watch your QA. My favorite lately are these Gear Wrench 120 tooth ratchets, not bad quality actually and as places get tighter and tighter those fine tooth ratchets are a must. Good stuff Charles…Cheers!
You NEED to check out this tool. Stanley® 89-962, 3/8″ Drive Rotator Ratchet. I have a ton of Snap-on ratchets but this is the one tool i always reach for. It is cheap but has a lifetime warranty. I can not easily describe why it is such an awesome tool. You really need to see it in action.
Yeah Matt rotator ratchets can be very handy and actually they’re an old idea that keeps getting re-made. Some of the real old ones have t-handles you twist. I wish some manufacturer would make a quality set especially something long handled in 1/4 & 3/8 drive. You won’t get a lot of torque from them but they can get a lot of fasteners at least started in impossible places.
Hey Matt and Pet look here, here is something match for your blog it may be useful for them.
Got an 02′ VW Beetle a-matic 2.0. Trany replaced at Houston Tx d.s. ($5.4k). Car made it to SA, Tx. 1 yr later cranked but no start. Towed to d.s in S.A.Tx ($83). Said it needed new key ($300). Said it needed Bat ($179). 1 mth later still in shop. Said it needed brake swtch due to EPC light on. ($150). Said needed cluster. Car now starts ($3.7k later) BUT in limp mode since. D.S. accepts NO responsibility to stuck in 2nd gear. Said not connected to no start problem. Remember, NEW trany, hmmm ??? Took to local shops. ($500) there ($400) there. ($100) for diag test. NO ONE can fix it. 1 shop said car stuck in limp mode due to comptr stuck on “alarm theft mode” Who and what do I believe. EPC light still on. Feels like no brakes. EPC light goes off once in a while, brakes feel perfect. Air bag light on now. No engine light. Blinkers blink rapidly now. Any suggestions (besides pouring gasoline all over it an igniting it). But I can’t. It’s my Mom’s car. Has 85k miles.
