Humble Mechanic Podcast

Almost three years ago I pressed record on the camera and started shooting the show. One of the things you guys have been asking me for is an audio only version of the videos. And I could not agree more that having an audio only side of the podcast is a great idea.

I am super happy to let you guys know the Humble Mechanic Podcast is now in a true audio format. I am so pumped to be able to bring this to you guys. Now we can ride to work together, cut the grass, hit the gym, even work in the garden. You don’t have to worry about data streaming or killing the battery on your phone. Just download from your favorite podcast place and smash play!

Going back in time
Because the video version of the show has been out for a while, I want to go back and post those shows in audio format. That means you get to travel back in time to listen to the early episodes. WOW has the show come a long way since then. For now, the way it will work is new Viewer Car Question podcast episodes will come out on Monday, just like the videos. The rest of the week I will post the older podcasts and quick answer videos from Youtube. This means you will get five days of podcasts for a really long time. This will give me time to fine tune the format, fine tune the notifications and get the show as awesome as it can be.

What about the videos?
For those of you that have been with me on Youtube, don’t worry. Nothing is really going to change from what you will see. I mean I Will still be working my face off to make the best videos and show I can. This is in addition to the video side. So much of the videos I have done for you guys work great in audio only format.

Chicago auto mechanic strike

On August 1st 2017 about 2000 Chicago area auto mechanics locked their tool boxes and headed for the picket line. The union contract ended and the union and NCDC could not reach an agreement on a new contract. As of the time of the video, and date of the blog post 8/21/17 the mechanics are still on the picket line.

A union strike is usually a last resort.  As an auto mechanic I have felt under paid and under appreciated for a lot of my career. The automotive industry is a strange world with a lot of “well that is the way it is kid” type thinking. That means there will come a time when a huge reset of that way of thinking comes. I don’t think that time is now, but I do think it’s soon.

In this video I will look at several sides of the debate. You will see that I agree strongly with the mechanics in many ways. You will also see that I understand the side of the dealer groups too. This is not a simple answer solution. And if there was a “simple solution” there would be a lot of pain involved in making it happen. I would also highly recommend heading over to YouTube and reading the comments. There are some good points that people on both sides have.

I personally feel that the industry is ready for a big change. Many of the practices are completely outdated. But I think many of the people involved may not like the result. It is not going to be the happy wonderful change many wish for. It will be painful, all both sides.

I also want to thanks all of you that tool the time to come by and drop your name in the hat. It was a lot of fun talking to you all about the box. It served me well in the year and a half I used it on the GTI. I also want to thank Sonic Tools. With out their support, I could not have done this for you guys. They are also picking up the shipping costs. Big time ups to them.

Painting Engine Bay

Painting an engine bay is pretty easy. For this job I decided to use spray paint from a rattle can. Rattle cans are cheap, and if you prep well, you get great results. The more parts you remove, the easier all of this becomes. I decided not to remove the brake booster and wiring harness. The extra work was not worth it to me on this round. As I mention in the video, this is probably not the last time the engine will be out of the car. If there is a next time, it will involve a little more shaving of the engine bay. Probably not a full shave, but you never know. Clearly I am not a big fan of shaving. 🙂
